Status Of Cotton: ICAC Resource Constraints And Cotton Production

To maintain the position of cotton worldwide, we need to take into account the social, environmental and economic impacts.

) the chairman and Mr. CEO Wallace Darnielle recently released a report on sustainability of cotton.

The report shows that:

The absorption of carbon in the growth process eliminates the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere equivalent to 7 million vehicles a year, and uses less 3% of cotton seed water than other crops in the world.

Contrary to some studies, which claim that cotton uses 6.8% of the world's pesticide dosage, the report indicates that since 1996, the effective components of pesticides in the cotton production process have been reduced by 23%, and the impact on the environment has decreased by 28%.

Taking the United States as an example, the production of water per kilogram of cotton has decreased by 45% compared with 25 years ago, and soil erosion has also been greatly reduced. Due to the use of biotechnology, the dosage of pesticides has been reduced by 50%.

In Texas, the cotton industry has created 25000 jobs directly. If we count some supportive industries, cotton will create more jobs.

In terms of economic sustainability, cotton is mainly affected by land rent.

Production costs

And market demand constraints.

Biotechnology has improved the yield and quality of cotton. The drought resistance, salt tolerance and nutrient absorption of cotton will further enhance the economic sustainability of cotton.

In terms of market demand, efforts should be made to expand the demand for cotton products worldwide.
