Cotton Production In Pakistan Is Expected To Decline By 23%; Pakistan; Cotton

Pakistan's production target for 2021 / 2022 is 10.5 million bales, an increase of 50% over the same period of last year. The cotton planting area of Pakistan is expected to exceed 2.33 million hectares, an increase of 16% compared with 2.01 million hectares this year. However, due to high input costs due to fertilizer, diesel, tractors, pesticides and water shortage, Pakistan may not meet its target of 10.5 million bales of cotton this year. Pakistan's cotton production in 2020 / 2021 is expected to decline by 23% to 7 million bales in 2020 / 2021, according to the Ministry of food security and Research (mnfsr).

This year, the cotton planting area in Pakistan was 2.01 million hectares, a year-on-year decrease of 17.4%. This is mainly due to the lack of national incentives for cotton farmers to maintain production, resulting in cotton competition for sugarcane and other crops. According to industry insiders, cotton farmers continue to urge the government to raise the lowest price of cotton this year to at least 5500 rupees per 40 kg, but the price set by the government is 5000 rupees per 40 kg.
